In 1925, one of the largest droughts in northeastern Brazil leads Gabriela to Ilhéus, a city in Bahia. Her beauty and sensuality attract the attention of the townspeople, especially Nacib, the owner of the most popular local bar. The man hires Gabriela to work in his home, and the relationship between the employer and the new employee develops into a love affair. Gabriela is played by Sônia Braga, and Nacib is portrayed by Marcello Mastroianni. Nacib and Gabriela's relationship becomes so close that the couple gets married. However, their marriage is shaken by Gabriela's infidelity with the town's biggest seducer. The personal story unfolds alongside another event in Ilhéus: the local 'coronel' awaits trial for the murder of his wife and her lover. According to other 'coronéis', the accused should be acquitted, as there was a significant reason for the crime. Nevertheless, times are changing, and some old beliefs are losing their previous power. In this drama directed by Bruno Barreto, the romantic relationship between Nacib and Gabriela is intertwined with the community's views on marriage, infidelity, and justice.
